Wenger wants bargain on Alonso

Published by Zac Lee Rigg on August 16, 2008

Xabi Alonso took part, and was perhaps the lone outfield light, in Liverpool’s dour draw with Standard Liege in the third round of the Champion’s League. The shift leaves him European cup tied for any teams looking to prize away the Euro 2008 winner.

This has Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger licking his lips for a bargain deal on the holding midfielder.

“It is a concern and something I will consider,” said Wenger according to Fox Sports.

“I feel the player loses value if he is not eligible for the Champions League. You cannot sell a player at the same price. Every club will consider that. I have a shortlist, but the list was always short.”

However, pundits expect Arsenal will be skipping over household names such as Gareth Barry and Alonso in their quest to bolster the midfield.

It would be great if we could offload him to Arsenal and hopefully recover our original £10-11m outlay. Alonso is not going to play much for Liverpool this season and I think he knows that himself. It’s probably why he’s reported as looking for a new challenge.

As for Xabi being the lone outfield light in midweek in Liege, you have got to be joking ! He was rubbish - muscled out of it, too slow, passing was all over the place and we all know he can’t tackle. Plessis had a far better match alongside him.
