Villa indebted to Reina and Alonso

Published by fiz on June 12, 2008

David Villa has thanked Reina and Alonso for persuading the Austrian referee to give him the match ball. Villa scored a hat-trick against Russia and was hoping to keep the match ball but the referee didn’t allow it.

Thanks to Reina and Alonso who are fluent in English, they managed to convince the official to hand over the match ball to the Man-of-the-Match.

Villa said: “The referee said he couldn’t give it to me because of a UEFA rule but Pepe and Xabi Alonso talked to him in English and managed to get the ball for me.”
