Torres in hunt for Golden Boot

Published by Purch on March 10, 2008

Fernando Torres has staked a claim to the Golden Boot of the premier league. He now has 19 goals, the same as Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor and just two short of Man United’s influential midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo.

Michael Owen notched that total on more than 1 occasion but never hit the magical 20 goal mark. Torres looks likely to hit that with 9 more league games to go. With Ronaldo and Adebayor not having notched as many as Torres in recent weeks, it is little wonder many people are now backing him.

Torres has hit 7 goals in his last 3 games at Anfield. He is now almost certain to feature in the starting line-up of Rafa’s squad. He was deprived the oppurtunity of a hat-trick on Saturday spurned by a change in the second half. Torres has now become an icon that reds fans love.

Fernando Torres knows he is close to bettering Ruud Van Nistelrooy for most League goals in a debut season in the premier league. The dutchman scored 23 in his first season in the league. 4 more goals is required to equal that feat and with 4 home games to go, it looks like he may just do it.
