The Verdict: Liverpool vs Man Utd

Another repeat of last season. A goal that shouldn’t have been. We dominated possesion. Their attack was just toothless. We just couldn’t deliver even a decent cross. Let alone the finishing. Absolutely gutted. Here’s the assessment of the players who started today.

Player Ratings

Reina - 7 - Not much to do today.

Riise - 6.5 - I really thought he did quite well in defence. Not the same could be said when he got forward. Just couldn’t pick out any player when delivering the cross. Still, an improved perfomance.

Hyypia & Carragher - 7.5 - I thought both defenders did quite well and was much composed considering they were pretty much left back alone at the back.

Arbeloa - 7 - Also did quite well. Didn’t gave Ronaldo an inch. Didn’t really connect with Benayoun upfront.

Kewell - 5.5 - Below average IMO. He couldn’t put in a decent cross and I think Manks had no problem stopping him. More is expected from him.

Gerrard - 6 - Gerrard just wasn’t himself today. Wasn’t inspiring enough.

Mascherano - 8 - Definitely the Man-of-the-Match for today’s game. He was tracking back, winning all loose balls and wasn’t afraid to get into a tackle. Not his best performance, but still the best player on the pitch today.

Benayoun - 5 - Disappointing.

Torres - 5.5 - Well, you could blame him for being “weak” or so. But it wasn’t really his fault today. He wasn’t receiving any good ball today.

Kuyt - 6 - Average. Was more active on the wings during the 2nd half.

Babel, Aurelio, Crouch - - - Would be unfair to rate them. Didn’t really had the time. Crouch was probably brought on too late. Babel could’ve gotten the equalizer.

Gutted. 9 points adrift.

LFC Supreme - “Should of put Babel on for him at half time. I really want Babel to start some more games, he did alright when he came on, made some shots at goal.”

Anfieldpurch - ” Yes Torres was unlucky but if he wants to win the golden boot hes got to put chances like that away”

Omar - ” Why does everyone rate Ronaldo so highly? He’s never played well in any big matches, and because he skins plays like Zat Knight every other week doesn’t make him the best player in the league. The only ‘big’ match I can remember him doing well in for Uniuted was against the mighty Millwall in the cup final! He was useless yesterday and I have no idea how people put him in the same league as Kaka and Gerrard when he never performs on the big stage against the big defences and big teams.

The strange thing about yesterday was that we didn’t really deserve to win, but at the same time United deserved to lose.”

I don’t know what to say…In these games, it’s all about taking that one off chance that decides the outcome; ManU did that and even though we were pressing on for most of the time, we couldn’t find anything more than a few close shots. Sadly, it takes a lot more to win matches. I don’t know if Torres was the missing link in the Liverpool jigsaw. We are missing Alonso’s cutting long passes, genuine crosses from both the flanks, and self-belief. The team has never shown the desire to win matches in the Premier League as they do in the Champions League; sometimes makes me wonder, there are two sets of players inside each one in the team: one who play the BPL and the others who play the UCL.
I’ve seriously started doubting if we could win the BPL this time.

It just comes down to putting your chances away. We could/should have been 2-0 up early on which would have changed everything.

United’s goal came against the run of play and was very close to being stopped by Carragher and then Reina, but they didn’t get to the ball and it went in, that’s that - we didn’t deserve to lose but we did so let’s move onto the Chavs this Wednesday and secure another final spot
