SLFCG - Could there be two Liverpool FC’s?

Published by Redneck on January 31, 2008

An ambitious attempt to purchase Liverpool Football Club has officially begun with the formation of “Share Liverpool FC Group” that consists of Liverpool fan and Business Lecturer, Rogan Taylor, Lawyer Kevin Jacquiss, and Phil French - former director of communications at the Premier League.

The proposal is to attain a grand sum of £500million, by selling shares in the club priced at £5,000 each - meaning we need a 100,000 strong army of share-holders for this audacious bid to ever succeed.

Via a newly-developed website, the group will be seeking shareholders up and down the country, aswell as targeting our massive market in Asia, in the hope they can attract investors quickly to oust the Yanks and build our new stadium as soon as possible.

Rogan Taylor said of the move: “The time is right to offer a different solution to the rising concerns that football fans have about the patterns of ownership developing at our major football clubs. Thousands of Liverpool fans have already demonstrated their dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs. Large amounts of debt often devolves onto clubs newly purchased, but the fans know that in the end, it will be they themselves who will have to pay it off through increased ticket prices and other schemes. In such a case, why not simply buy the club yourselves?

“What many don’t realise is that there are other ways of financing and taking ownership of big clubs. In Germany and Spain, most top level football clubs are simply ‘Not For Sale’. They are owned by many thousands of ‘member fans’. The Champions League has been won on six occasions in the last 15yrs by clubs owned and run in such a way” he added.

The move will spark a direct competition to become the first club in England to be owned by the fans with the 32,000 strong Man Ure network.

Do you back such a move by our fans? Could this turn into another situation similar to the one we saw in 2005 at Man Ure after the takeover by the Glazers with a divided split of fans and the formation of a “New Liverpool F.C.”?
