7th January 2006, a 3rd round tie at Kennilworth road in the evening. Liverpool beginning their campaign with a fabulous win. Steven Gerrard curled Liverpool in front after good work by Djibril Cisse and Gerrard’s national compatriot Peter Crouch. It was 2 more Steves that left the reds behind.

Firstly Steve Howard timed his run to perfection before rounding Scott Carson and netting for Luton. Steve Robinson then turned past Carragher before making it 2-1 for the then Championship side. Liverpool should have been level but Djibril Cisse saw his penalty saved by Marlon Beresford.

It got worse as Carson was stood on by Rowan Vine who subsequently went over and won a penalty for the Hatters. Kevin Nicholls slammed home to make it 3-1. Then Florent Sinama-Pongolle scored after a great run and finished neatly as well. Game on. Alonso then scored a 40-yard wonder striker which John Motson famously said, “It’s Dipping!” as the reds for the second time in a major cup game in 8 months found themselves at 3-3.
