Gerrard on target for England
Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch were both involved in a friendly versus USA having been named amongst the 31 man squad. The Liverpool captain scored a goal and was named Man of the Match, having played the entire 90 minutes. Crouch scratched together 22 minutes despite not featuring for Liverpool lately.
Gerrard, wearing number 10, started on the left of a 4-4-2 with freedom to cut inside for Fabio Capello’s squad. He linked up well throughout the first half, but it was when he drifted more centrally in the second half that he made his real impact. Liverpool target Garth Barry provided the through ball which released Gerrard in behind the Yank defense, and Liverpool’s talisman calmly sidefooted past Aston Villa target Brad Guzan in the 58th minute. Most counter attacks continued to be led by Gerrard, and his quick play caused havoc among his opponents.
Earlier John Terry, captain of England for the day, headed home a David Beckham free kick to start the scoring.
Ten minutes after the Gerrard goal Peter Crouch replaced Jermain Defoe to lead the England attack. He failed to create a goal, but his height and touches were a trouble to the American defense.
Jamie Carragher watched from home as he has retired from international play earlier this season, and on-loan ‘keeper Scott Carson lost his place to Manchester City phenomenon Joe Hart.
