Benitez: “Xabi’s position is safe”

Rafael Benitez has secured Xabi Alonso’s position in his 5-man midfield for next season, even if Gareth Barry arrives on Merseyside this summer.
The future of Alonso at Anfield had been thrown into doubt when Rafa was keen to secure the signing of Aston Villa’s captain Gareth Barry, which prompted speculation suggesting some of Europe’s top clubs where touting for his signature, including Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
“He is our player, he has a contract,” Benitez said in The Independent.
“Barry can play in three different positions, so I don’t think we need to worry about this.” he added.
