Newclear missile from Xabi

Published by Purch on March 6, 2008

Looking back 24 months Xabi Alonso had one goal from his own half. That came against Luton. September that year he did it again, this time against Newcastle. Now as they face Newcastle at Anfield on Saturday with Shay Given likely to miss the game through injury and Xabi pushing for another start. Steve Harper could come up against the man who beat him from 60 yards 18 months ago.

Xabi Alonso admitted had Harper not slipped that it may not have gone in. Xabi rarely tries them now but has not netted one since the meeting with Newcastle. Maybe Saturday is a time for correction.

Xabi will be hoping that Liverpool will basque in the glory of another goal for him as he battles with Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva and Javier Mascherano for a starting place in the midfield. Alonso clashed heads with Leiva a weeks ago and has sported a blackeye and a bandage above the eye since the incident. But if you think he’s going to lie down and rest, you will be mistaken. Xabi will be wanting to stick Newcastle to the sword and add to his goal tally as rumours he is returning to Spain gather speed.
