Madrid Beaten 37 years ago today

27th May 1981, Liverpool Football Club brought home their 3rd European Cup beating Real Madrid 1-0 thanks to a goal from Alan Kennedy. Bob Paisley guided the side but it was our left-back on the night who took the plaudits.

Kennedy told the Official Club site, “When I scored in 1981 when Ray Kennedy took the throw-in, I have to say I didn’t particularly want the ball. I wasn’t looking for it, I was just trying to help other players out to create a little bit of space, Ray threw the ball in, it hit me on the chest and basically I just wellied the ball towards the goal.”

This match was the last time Ray Clemence pulled on a Liverpool shirt. The Skegness born keeper made 470 appearances for Liverpool before moving to Tottenham Hotspur. He cost Liverpool just £18,000 and was sold for £300,000.
