Luton face final game ever?
Published by Purch on January 6, 2008
Today’s clash with Luton Town is of major importance for the southerners as it could be their final game ever. The side have until 5pm Monday 7th January to find a buyer to release them from administration or this will be their final game.
Rafa Benitez is missing a few players and could even choose to give Luton a good chance in a rather meaningless game for both sides with turmoil on both sides. Uncertainty over the future of Rafa Benitez rages in the Liverpool camp with several sunday newspapers reporting of his preperations and expectations for the sack and the latest attempt from Real Madrid to lure him. Luton’s players don’t even know if they’ll have a club come Tuesday morning.
If the Fa Cup is a welcome distraction from the problems for the fans then spare a thought for the clubs and their staff. Liverpool’s main problem is that Rafa Benitez has publically slammed the owners and the owners have gone against promises they had entered into when they formally completed their takeover. Luton have not payed their players in 10 weeks. They are losing up to £500,000 a month and desperately need somebody to rescue them. A heavy deadline with less than 36 hours for a buyer to get funds and complete their acquisition, the luton players could be forgiven for not being fussed about the game.
Should Luton win and then fold, Liverpool would hope to get their place in the draw but with the complicated timetable for a takeover with a week to review an offer following the closure of the window and another 6-8 weeks until the formal sale is completed. If nobody comes with a suitable offer with enough backing to stop administration happening again then this could well be our last date with Luton, a club we last played 2 years ago in an 8 goal thriller. At that time Luton were just 1 division below Liverpool with less than 40 places in the pyramid seperating the clubs. Now 24 months on, the outlook is bleak as the League 1 side struggle to recind their losses.

its a sorry state of affairs for clubs to be closing down when there are countless £millions in the game.
It’s easy to say the FA should step in and give them some cash but where would that end?
There needs to be strict regulations involving the finances of some clubs, with extra cash being made available (taken from the EPL clubs for example) to cover running costs to ensure a clubs existance.
Is it that serious? Surely there’s going to be another way of dealing with this issue?
