Keller: Don’t Generalize Americans
Published by fiz on April 19, 2008
While Kasey Keller understands the reaction of the Liverpool fans to the ownership saga, the American goalkeeper reminded that money is the rule of the game nowadays.
“Like it or not, every top club is now a franchise” said Keller
“Manchester United is the most successful franchise in the world and Liverpool are desperately trying to catch them up.”
“I understand the fans’ frustration with the boardroom situation at Liverpool. It’s never going to be nice when you have two very wealthy businessmen fighting for control. But the nationality of those two guys should have nothing to do with it. They could just as easily be British. The fact they’re both American is just something the supporters have latched on to.”
Keller insists that the generalization of Americans not knowing their Football, or soccer, is wrong.
“There’s a whole generation of Americans growing up playing the sport and the idea that soccer is a soft option goes out of the window as soon as kids suffer their first kick,”
“I remember a world champion boxer from Colombia telling me the most pain he ever endured was on a soccer pitch. The Premier League gets huge TV coverage in the States. And because there’s a bunch of Americans at Fulham, there’s a particular interest in our team.” said Keller.
