Steven Gerrard dampened down our 2-0 victory over Inter Milan tonight by stating it is only half-time in our quest for further European glory.

“It was a big night and a big win, but it means nothing if we don’t finish the job in the second leg, but I’m confident we’ll do it.” said our captain.

Marco Materazzi was sent off for two bookable offences early on which handed us the advantage we sought after so much.

Gerrard added: “I’m not surprised no. They were two bookable offences so he deserved to go”

“The win is for Rafa, the fans, for everybody connected with the club. It’s a big win for everyone.” he went on.

Dirk Kuyt, who silenced many critics with his sweet ‘ground-first’ strike after 85 minutes to open the scoring enthused: “We kept patient and it is a big win for us. But we still have a second game to go though”.

Meanwhile manager Rafa Benitez was just as cautious going into the second-leg on the 11th of March.

“It is a great win. But we need to play another game, so we must be careful.  We have confidence - but we know Inter are a good team.” said the Spaniard.

“We had confidence and passion. The team were doing the right things, passing the ball and trying to win the second ball, two goals in the last minutes is always very positive.”

“The players are playing for the club - we are a fantastic club.” he added.
