El Zhar eager to impress against Crewe

Published by Zac Lee Rigg on September 23, 2008

Following Rafael Benitez’s comments that youth could get its chance in the Carling Cup this evening against Crewe, Nabil El Zhar has jumped at the chance to grab some action.

“The Carling Cup is a big opportunity for players who don’t play a lot to show what they can do, especially for a young lad like me,” El Zhar told the Offish website.

“I’ve had a little calf problem but I should be okay and hope to feature against Crewe.

“The derby is the biggest game of the season and everyone wants to be involved in it. If I play well against Crewe then hopefully the boss might involve me in the squad, but we have to concentrate on this game first.

“We know this is like a final for Crewe but it is the same for us as well. Strange things can happen and we have to be at our best and just go and win the game.” added the youngster.

Last season’s version of the Carling Cup holds a good memory for El Zhar. He struck a wonder goal against Cardiff City as a virtual unknown, and has pushed on from that goal to be in contention.

“It was a good game for me and I managed to score a nice goal,” said the Reds number 31.

“It was definitely the best goal I’ve ever scored and I was really happy. Scoring goals is always nice for any player, especially at Anfield, but the most important thing for us is to beat Crewe and get to the next round of the competition.”

Since arriving at Anfield from St Etienne in October 2006, El Zhar has made 10 first team appearances and scored one goal.

During that time he has played in various positions and admits his versatility could prove to be a useful asset in his goal to become a first team regular at Anfield.

“I used to play as a second striker but I’ve played on the left and right hand side at Liverpool,” he said.

“I think I’m better down the right side because I am right footed but I will play anywhere in the forward line for the team.

“I hope to play more games this season and prove myself. When you are playing with world class players like Steven Gerrard you can only improve as a player.” he added.
