Diouf: “Sunderland as good as Liverpool”
Published by Zac Lee Rigg on August 16, 2008
El Hadji Diouf had quite the turbulant career at Liverpool. Brought in for £10m pounds after his scintillating performances for Senegal in the 2002 World Cup, Diouf replaced the departing Nicolas Anelka and was charged with livening up a stale Liverpool attack.
He quickly found himself second choice to Emile Heskey, and was shoved off to the right wing where he showed a decent work ethic but not enough skill to play at a top club. After three too many spitting incidents, Diouf was moved on to Bolton.
This summer, he has joined ex-Manchester United captain Roy Keane in Sunderland and will face Liverpool in their opening match Saturday.
Not content with literally spitting at Liverpool fans, Diouf has proclaimed his former club unable to compete for the title.
“Liverpool do have a good team, but they can’t challenge United or Chelsea,” he told the Daily Star.
“It’s not just about changing one or two players – it’s about not really having to change the team.”
Then, as if that we’re enough to endear himself to the Anfield faithful, he suggested that Sunderland could compete with Liverpool in the upcoming season.
“We are not that far away from Liverpool.
“I used to say that at Bolton and every season, except last year, we did very well against them.”
Sunderland finished 15th in the Premier League last season.

Im a Sunderland supporter.
And, we can’t compete with Liverpool, yes, weve brought in some very good players, better than what we had anyway.
But, at this moment we cant compete with the scousers, we need to be competing with the Villas and Rovers and move on from there.
