Boro issue hands-off warning over Downing
Published by fiz on July 29, 2008
Middlesbrough insists that Stewart Downing is not for sale despite reports linking the winger with a move to Anfield this summer.
“We have not had any calls about Stewart and nor would we welcome any,” said Southgate.
“He is very settled. He is positive about everything. We are determined to keep hold of him,” he added.
The young winger earlier stated that he might have to move to match his ambitions.
He said: “My mates are big Boro fans and they obviously want me to be at Middlesbrough for all my career, and if we become a top team, a Champions League team, then there would be no question about going.
“But if we don’t eventually make that step, then one day I might have to make that decision. It’s an important couple of years for me.
“I think every player likes to try something new in their career and I’m no different.”
