Benitez Targets Aimar Swoop
January 26, 2008 · By Captain Gerrard8 · Jump to comments
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is interested in bringing Real Zaragoza attacking midfielder, Pablo Aimar to Anfield. The Argentinian international played under Benitez while they were at Valencia.
Since then he has gone on to star for Zaragoza in La Liga after a £8.5m move from Valencia in July 2006. Benitez is keen to bring him to Liverpool but will have to bid as much as £8 million.
Though a hugely popular figure among the Zaragoza fans, Aimar is believed to be ready to test himself in the Premiership and new Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan has already registered an interest in taking him to the north east.
But Benitez is monitoring the situation and could be prepared to make a move for Aimar – whom Diego Maradona once described as his “legitimate successor as the world’s best player” – if the price is right.
The 28-year old has been linked with a move to the Premier League before when Liverpool were said to of made a £10 million bid for him before his move to Zaragoza.

Aimar absolutely is a GREAT player n i would love to see him in a liverpool jersey. Plus, Benitez could adapt to his favourite position when he managed valencia (4-2-3-1). CB=Carra & Agger, RB=Arbeloa, LB=Riise, Defnsive Mid=Masherano & Alonso, Left Att Wing=Babel, Center Att Mid=Gerrard, Right Att Wing=Aimar, Lone Striker=Torres. This will be a great balance team. Great attacking football (Gerrard and Aimar can switch position between themselves and will always be goal threats and providing killer passes to Torres) and powerful defensively where Alonso and Masherano will provide backing to the 4 defenders. Think about it Benitez.
Good idea, yes. I’ll think about that.

He’s a great player, no doubt. But the question is, do we really need him?
That was my question as well Fiz.
Positional wise i don’t think we’re desperate by any means, but for the lack of flair often in our side he’d be a fantastic addition.
Personally i’d have him over Alonso, ’cause A) if we spend £17million on Mascherano Alonso’s hardly going to start anyway, B) if we need someone to act in the mould of Alonso, then Leiva can do it, C) the flair/creativity we often lack (a la against United) he’d offer in abundence, and D) we’d make a profit, being able to channel the money into a top left-winger (see my other post about that)
Though i can’t see him really coming in Jan… not when Mascherano is a top priority anyway.
Do we need him? I think we should go for a striker, not for a midfielder.
