Benitez in sensational £12million swoop
It is believed that Rafael Benitez is confident of making David Bentley a Liverpool player. There has been reports that Liverpool are set to make a £12million bid for the 23-year-old winger.
It is known that both Liverpool and Atletico Madrid are in a tug-of-war over the young English winger.
Liverpool are desperately looking for a winger to replace Harry Kewell whose contract is running out soon. Furthermore, Bentley is proven in the premier league. Playing regularly in Europe’s top competition might tempt him to Anfield.
The England winger contracts run out in July 2011, which means Liverpool or Atletico may have to fork out a large sum to get their man.
Manchester City and Valencia are among a host of other clubs interested.

you must be kidding! Bentley is an ok player for Blackburn but no way is he worth 12mil pounds. don’t think he will add much more than Pennant have done so far.
your right. we dont want more average players. we want someone who can do pretty much everything from midfield like cristiano: score, cross, take players on and just have the ability to turn the game around with some flare and brilliance. And i dont think he fits the bill. Shame our pathetic scouts had the chance to buy cristiano a year b4 man u and didnt because he was too young!
if that twerp is looking for a good player to buy there is only one i can recommend and that is daniel alaves. have we got the money because he is expensive but worth it
don’t even think about signing anyone rafa because after today’s performance, come the end of the season you won’t be our manager.
great bid…keep it on rafa…but not forget david villa…
at the moment liverpool do not have the means to buy great players….. Man U does not really spend less than 20 mil on a player…. until we can afford greatness…. we will have to make do with what we have…. we hav too many average players we two great wingers…an play Babel upfront… dont know why rafa always substitute babel an leave kuyt on….. it kinda make me sad to see kuyt play…….
bently is a quality player you lot are all idiots for not seeing it. He is prob the best right winger in the league bar ronaldo. i would be well chuffed if we get him. just becuase he is from blackburn doesn’t mean he isn’t a great player
Come on guys, Rafa has an eye for mediocrity, he wants to make sure Liverpool end up with a lot of debt and a bunch of players that would struggle to keep any club from being relegated…. its so sad. Just look at the “skills gap” between the top 3 and the other 17 clubs that says it all.
i dont think signing bentley would be a mistake.whenever i watch blackburn play he always impresses me and has a good eye for goal but we need a lot more quality players and yesterdays preformance against united sadly showed how much of a gap in quality united have over us,we can do it in europe but we need consistency against the other top teams in the league if we are ever going to challenge for the title !
the artical says bentley is proven premiership.. surely that aint enough..? pennant was simular, looked good at birmingham was there star man, he is average - poor at a club like liverpool, bentley has a lot to prove still in my books, would prefer someone with international experience and or champions league, for 12 mil give me muntari or kranjcar from pompey both have more experience and both look as good as bentley to me..
The first post asks what could Bently add that Pennant dosn`t. What about goals from wide areas, as Pennant has only contributed a poxy 2 in over 70 games and that includes one that bounced off his ankle when kicked against him !!
Bently I feel would fit very well into the system Rafa is playing and wouldnt need time to sttle like a foreign import.
rafa get a grip bentley 12mill not worth a carrot that man, were liverpool football club and for once think of it like that we only buy quality players and bentley does not fit that category, the quality of a club we are should be attracting top quality players like messi etc etc knowing full well were not going to get him but thats the quality we shud aim for. Babel for my will become an outsatnding player first touch is terrible dont get me wrong but shouldnt rafa be keeping him behind to work on tht because this kid reminds me of a young thierry henry and will become good beleive me and as for kuyt i really dont understand what he c’s in this man he is woeful and i feel sorry for peter crouch the man can do no wrong. Torres scores he then plays nxt game, crouch scores he sits on bench next game can anyway justify that for me, that i dnt understand so hope u read this rafa so for once read from a fans point of view for once.
bentley is better than kewell and the wages we save from kewell will amount to 3 million a year.
pennant days are number so bentley is a good choice as he is proven and can be part of the team straight away next season.
12million is abit pricy but if we sell pennant for 5 million and save 1.5 a year on wages then we can bring in bentley for only 5.5 million - so I think it will be a good deal.
I have enough of Riise playing LW while Babel has not mature yet.
bentley is a out and out winger while pennant doesn’t play by the line often. pennant always cuts into the middle at the final 3rd (because he cannot pass the LBs). As for Bentley, he plays by the line and can give good cross (good decision making in final 3rd), threatening in the box, and scores goals unlike pennant who can’t.
so in my opinion if the price is between 5-7 million (should pennant goes the other way), I think it’s going to be a good deal.
By the way, who says bentley is not better than kewell and pennant? just look at his stats in Optim.
