Benitez: Alonso can leave, if the Price Is Right
Published by fiz on August 9, 2008
Rafael Benitez concedes that Xabi Alonso might still leave if the price is right. Both Juventus and Fenerbache have failed with bids for the Spaniard, with Liverpool believed to be seeking about £18m.
It’s believed that funds from Alonso’s departure will be used to bring the over-priced Barry to Anfield.
“We knew Alonso was a very good player and as a result he had a good price (on his head). We had offers, but they were not enough so we decided he needed to stay with us,” said the Spanish coach.
“It could be that he does stay with us.
“For me it is not a problem if he stays or not. He can stay, we always have felt he is a good player.
“We are only talking about a very, very good price. He is a good player, if he is not going to bring a good price then it is very simple, easy to understand.
“I heard the crowd, obviously. We know now, as we knew before, that he could stay with us.”

OK it’s only my view and I’m probably in the minority but I think Rafa’s got it right.
From September onwards Alonso will only be a squad player. He won’t be in the team unless players are injured or rested. There’s no chance he can displace Mascherano or Gerrard.
Can’t see him being happy with that. So sell him. Harsh but true.
And that’s without even having to add the Gareth Barry complication.
Xabi Alonso is one of the greatest ball passer on earth and is a player with great creativity and combativity> I don’t understand why Benitez think about a good price for such a player. He’s a second Stevie G, a pillar of the squad. It’s becoause he’s a very good player that Arsenal wants him desperately, and from a manager of the calibre of Rapha, a decision of selling him to our main rival in the title race would not be a wise thing to do. We cannot give them the whip to flog us, not a team in the Premier League and not Arsenal which is always on our head.
If Rapha take this as an opportunity to raise cash for the purchase of Gareth Barry, he’s very fool.
We cannot permit ourselves to lose any more player, as the success depends on a well established squad.
