Babel replaced by Boulahrouz
Published by Zac Lee Rigg on June 1, 2008
Ryan Babel will be replaced in the Holland squad by Chelsea defender Khalid Boulahrouz.
Babel was forced to withdraw from the Dutch squad for the Euro 2008 after tearing ankle ligaments in training. The 21 year old had been tipped to play an important role off the bench in the tournament, but will now have to focus on regaining fitness ahead of Liverpool’s next season.
For his part, Boulahrouz is no stranger to injuries. Because of them, he hardly featured for Seville FC this season, where he spent the year on loan. The defender was included in one of Marco van Basten’s later provincial squads, and is invited to the final 23 man squad to help shore up the defense.
Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt is still in the squad and could see more pitch time because of Babel’s injury.
