Babel On Target As The Dutch Stumble
Published by Daniel Watchorn on August 10, 2008
Ryan Babel opened his Olympic account today, scoring the first goal of a game in which the Netherlands surrendered a one goal lead, eventually equalising in the final minute to draw 2-2 with the United States.
Playing as a lone striker, Babel headed de Guzman’s cross towards goal only to see it saved by recent Aston Villa signing Brad Guzan. Babel was the first to react putting away the rebound in the 19th minute.
The United States fought back in the second half, with goals from Kljestan and recent Villarreal signing Jozy Altidore, for a 2-1 lead. In injury time Simon struck a free-kick low and hard past Guzan for what seemed for a while to be an unlikely equaliser.
Babel missed out on Euro 2008 due to an ankle injury and Liverpool will be eagerly awaiting his return from International football as the domestic and European season gets underway.
Babel made forty-nine appearances for Liverpool last season, scoring ten goals.
