Arbeloa: Spain and Torres differ on style

Published by Zac Lee Rigg on June 7, 2008

Ahead of the team’s Euro 3008 campaign, fullback Alvaro Arbeloa has questioned the squad’s ability to mix well. He claims that the quick, short passing game Spain employ isn’t working to the strengths of striker Fernando Torres, despite calling it “stunning.”

“It is clear that the national team has a style of playing that does not best suit him or really allow him to shine,” Arbeloa said.

“But Torres is one of the best strikers in the world and he is going to prove that at Euro 2008. The way we play may not be the best for him but that shouldn’t stop him scoring goals.”

Making sure star striker Torres is on form could make or break Spain’s chances in Switzerland and Austria. Coach Luis Aragones has admitted that if David Villa is fit he will partner the Liverpool sensation for a more potent attack.
