Anfield Legend: “Owners were right”
Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson feels that Liverpool don’t need the services of Gareth Barry. He strongly believes the Rafa Benitez should focus more on signing a winger.
Furthermore, he thinks that the £18m price-tag is absurd.
“In terms of the latest behind-the-scenes spat, I’m with the owners.
They’re not necessarily right in taking a decision away from the manager but they are not wrong in their judgement on Gareth Barry.”
“Some players are simply too expensive, that’s life. And Benitez needs a different type of player to strengthen his side.
Barry is not the answer. Liverpool need somebody out wide because the midfield is too much of an imbalance at the moment,” he told The Liverpool Daily Post.

Mark Lawrenson wants to keep his big nose out of it, he was never a true red and has admited it in public.
Yes, Lawro & the yanks needs to let Rafa do the job and get on with it. We need to fully support our manager - lets not undermine him and see him leave like he did with Valencia.
I respect Mr. Lawrenson’s opinion, BUT he must admit that he does not have Benites’s experience, qualifications, and MORE IMPORTANTLY, the time in contact with the players that he has. It would be very presumptuous to disagree with the manager when Rafa sees his players for 250 full days a year, while Mr. Lawrenson only sees them for 50 times a year for 2 hours! It is also a matter of doing what’s best for the club, and your public comments will only cause more rift. If you wated to help, why not call Rafa up and give him your opinion? Maybe its better publicity?
Thanks Mr Lawrenson, your opinion is greatly appreciated and I’m sure Benitez will see the error of his ways.
United paid around 18 million each for the following players; Carrick, Hargreaves, Nani, Anderson. Now, If I’m not mistaken the Mancs are current champions. So if they can pay 18m for each of those guys, surely Gareth Barry (who is a better player) is worth 18m. It may not be ideal, but if we genuinely want to challenge for the title we need to pay the top dollar. Pride will hinder our progress if we’re not getting our top targets out of principal.
The worst part is the owners saying ‘money isn’t the issue’. Looks like we’re going to end up with another second choice transfer.
I feel so sorry for Rafa, he must be thinking the Valencia nightmare has followed him. He asked for a lampshade and he’s been given a table leg.
