£31million worth of players Rafa MUST get rid of!
March 17, 2008 · By Redneck · Jump to comments
Despite what records tell us, this season has been a disappointment so far. Yes we are still in with a good shout of the Champions League title, and we’re not that far away from the sharp-end of the league table, but before this season started we all genuinely felt that this could be our year.
If it wasn’t for the suicidal results we suffered during January and February, we would be dominating the EPL with comparitive ease, but “if’s & but’s” don’t win you titles - so here is £31million worth of players that Rafa Benitez must rid himself of if we are going to bring the bloody title home.
John Arne Riise (£4million): I’ve always been a big fan of JAR, he has scored some spectacular & important goals throughout his time at Anfield, but he simply is not performing anymore. He’s useful as a stop-gap on the left-wing as a replacement for Babel if he was injured, but he certainly is not a title-winning winger who can provide our strikers with the deliveries they expect.
His defensive qualities have never been fantastic and I feel his contribution to the team is simply not good enough.
Fabio Aurellio (£5million): It’s difficult to judge Fabio to be honest. He never seems to ‘get stuck in’ enough for my liking and hasn’t done enough to warrant a starting slot in Rafa’s line-up. Defensively he’s okay, nothing special, but he makes the odd costly mistake which is something we cannot afford to make if we are dominate club football once more.
Harry Kewell (£FREE): Dump this useless Aussie as soon as possible Rafa for God’s sake. He has wasted his talent and wasted this marvellous opportunity that thousands of people would give their right-arm for. Initially I lost all faith in the man at Istanbul when he appeared to give up running for a ball he could’ve won, I mean this was the Champions League final and he wasn’t giving it his all.
I was prepared to give him another chance after a handful of determined displays, but as per usual he has let us all down once again. Off-load him for nothing and put his wages towards new signings.
Sami Hyypia (£FREE): As much as I love the guy, he’s getting too old for life at the top of the Premiership. He’s still a danger going forward for corners, and can read the game better than anyone in my view, but his lack of pace (which he has never really been blessed with to be brutally honest) is beginning to show in every game, which usually ends up with the Finn giving away a foul in a dangerous position when he knows he has been beaten.
Jermaine Pennant (£5million): After showing so much promise as a youthful youngster, Jermaine is still to fulfil his potential and simply is not upto Liverpool’s standard. He consistantly fails to beat the first man when trying to put a cross in the box, something that is imperative for wingers.
Peter Crouch (£14million): Although I’d like to see Rafa adopt a style of play that would suit the giant striker, I think it would be better for him if he did leave Liverpool in search of pastures new. Rafa’s style of play simply does not suit Peter in the slightest.
Dirk Kuyt (£6million): I’m a real big fan of Dirk’s purely because of his workrate and determination when on the pitch, but Rafa has realised he isn’t upto much when in front of the goal which has forced him to play out wide and pick up any loose balls when in the opposing team’s danger area. He must make a switch elsewhere as title-winning side’s need prolific and reliable finishers up-front, sorry Dirk, you’ve been added to my list with great regret.
Andriy Voronin (£1million): Maybe Rafa thought he was playing the latest football managerial game when he bought Andriy on a free last summer, with one eye on making a quick million on him in 12 months time. Not Liverpool quality, not Premiership quality, nuff said.

As a supposed Liverpool FC supporting website, this is appalling. Every Liverpool player deserves to be treated with respect. This assassination of particular players does the club no good . We all have an opinion, but keep morale destroying rants in the pub. Do you ever go to a match so you can vent these comments, or do you have to use this forum as you are an armchair ‘fan’?
This is the site that proudly had the S*n as a partner!
From that i’d say yes to all but Aurelio and Hyypia. For me both are more than competent as cover for first-team players - Hyypia’s obviously not going to start but i think he’s excellent for Skrtel and Agger to learn from as well as being a decent fourth choice… Plus, it’s a tricky position to fill. A young defender isn’t really going to want to come and be fourth choice, especially when Skrtel and Agger are young and the future, so you’re essentially left with an old’n. I think Fabio could start but he struggles constantly with injury and can rarely get to the top of his game and maintain it, so i think we need a new left-back.
Kuyt i’d like to stay but i feel like admitting defeat. He has no place in our first team but could do a job as a squad player perhaps, although i’m half hoping Newcastle get relegated and we could sign Martins on the cheap. I think he’d be good cover for Torres (he’s strong and quick, with a good shot) as well as being a real impact player, which you could argue Kuyt isn’t. For me, and i know people will disagree, but Kuyt is a poacher that isn’t being allowed by Rafa to play that role - he’s always been told to drop off and if you watched him in the Dutch league he didn’t do that at all.
I’d add Finnan to your list though - i think age is catching up with the once faultless full-back and a younger man with similar attacking capabilities should be brought in.
And you’ve forgotten Carson, who’ll more than likely leave. That’s a possible £8million.
We really need to get rid of quite a few of our squad players and replace them with better individuals - if we got rid of 8 players and brought in 4 or 5 of a higher calibre i’d be more than happy, assuming that including one top class player to fill the right-wing berth.
Assuming we have money i’m optimistic Benitez will fix the problems we’ve faced - but what we have to remember is that we’ll have a lot of players that’ll have only been here for either the next season or this season and will need time to gel. We can’t have a knee-jerk reaction if we don’t challenge.
True words Ben, I would love to see Hyypia stay for at least another year, and then move into the backroom or perhaps coach the reserves, I just dont think he would stay to be 4th choice thats why I added him to the list.
Forgot all about Carson, so thats another £6-8mill towards the kitty for Rafa’s re-build. I think he’s a quality ‘keeper and would be ideal backup to Reina but he’s obviously not going to do that is he so t’ra Scott.
Redneck I fully concur with your comments with the exception of Aurelio and possibly Pennant. I think both players could still be useful squad players although clearly more signings are needed in those positions. I suspect Insua may be ready to challenge for the first team left back slot next year.
I feel a tinge of regret about Sami more than Kuyt but your comments about the big Finn are very fair. Its not as if any player can go on forever and Sami has had a great innings. Even Shanks (as are all great managers) was ruthless in offloading players who had reached their sell by date. Nothing can ever take away what Sami achieved with us and we will always love him but his days as a first team player are in the past.
Kuyt on the other hand, despite having a big heart, will never be a top premiership player and his shortcomings are being cruelly exposed on the right wing. He has no pace, a poor first touch and cannot dribble. Lets face reality. Poor old Dirk is not going to trouble jet paced left backs like Evra and Cliche. While he works very hard the god given ability to make a real impact just isn’t there. If we’re serious about ending our annual cycle (of being dead and buried in the league by Christmas every year) we need better quality wingers and supporting strikers who can take some of the load of Torres and Gerrard. Kuyt seems to do a lot more talking in the media than he ever does on the pitch
@Dennis: Your spot on about the big Finn mate, he deserves his tenth season, even if it was a bit-part role, but I think he may follow Henchoz’s footsteps with a move to a Premiership struggler, only to fade away gradually.
I really do wish he would stay on at Anfield in some capacity as Ben pointed out, our younger players, and we have a lot of them now, could learn soooo much from Sami as you simply cannot buy the experience he has had throughout his career.
Football isn’t a kind sport, and you HAVE to think of the club before ANY player, so perhaps Rafa has a soft spot for Sami and will give him a 1yr extension. He’s shown he has compassion in the past so you never know.
The thing that irritates me about Pennant is that he hits the closest man to him when trying to put in a cross.
Yes he can get it right, dribble halfway up the park and curl a blinder onto Nando’s head, but I’m continuously frustrated with seeing his cross being deflected down by a defender.
Aaron Lennon is in a similar mould but far more skillfull and has that attacking mentality that we crave for so much on our wings.

@Waino: Your comment doesn’t really deserve a response, but how did we “proudly” have the S*n as a partner? Newly created (and disguised) S*n campaigns caught us out for about 5 hours, which isn’t bad considering only one person has access to banner rotations.
If you read my article properley, you would see that I treated the majority of the players I listed with the utmost respect.
You don’t seriously think that one solitary article, venting my personal thoughts, is going to damage team morale do you?
These men are professionals and they handle FAR worse week-in week-out.
I don’t rate Riise particularly highly, but he can do a decent enough job at left back, I would take £4 mil, I don’t think you are going to get it for him though!
Aurelio has played well recently, the width he provides has resulted in Babel getting more space, but because of his injury reputation there is no way anyone would bid £5 mil.
The two left fullbacks give a good balance, depending on the skill/physicality of the opposition. I don’t think there is much reason to change this position (unless you get the £4mil + £5 mil quoted here!).
Defo keep Hyypia, and Finnan, because you are not going to get any money for them (1 mil tops for Finnan), and so there is no point getting rid of them.
Man Utd are currently top of the league with Wes Brown playing fullback for most of the season, it is not necessarily worth spending to much on.
If Pennant can get anywhere near the form of last seasons Champions league final I would keep him. He hasn’t played much recently, and this seems to make people stop rating a player, like what happened to Alonso during his injury and just after.
I agree with Ben about Kuyt. I think his work rate has potentially worked to his detriment, in that he isn’t played in his natural position because he can run his nuts off for the team. Kuyt was a great finisher in Holland, yes the prem is faster, but there is no way his finishing ability would have disappeared like it has, he just hasn’t consistently played as an out and out forward. Anyway we have the far superior Torres, so I’d easily take £8 mil for him.
And as for Kewell, offer him one year on a reasonable contract of about £25,000 a week, and if he stays he shows he’s not a money grabber and he wants to play, and if he goes then no loss.
5 hours of allowing the S*n to advetise itself alongside the name of Liverpool FC is 5 hours too much. However you’re right that, Kewell apart, your coments are negative not disrespectful. My point is that the media slag our club off as much as they can, so why join in? Your point of view isn’t aired between you and a few lads in the boozer, it’s public and harshly critical. Blogs are not private musings but can be used to great effect.
It’s hard to keep running when a mussel is torn off the bone.
wasted talent is a little different to ‘injury cursed’
not every injry kewell has had has been his fault.
Hyypia has been very good for us this season, he should be kept for at least 1 more season as cover and the fact he is an excellent teacher.
Hyypia would not have given away any more goals than carragher has this season.
14 for Crouch?? hahaha maybe last year when he was playing and scoring and bent had just gone for 16mill! No one would pay that. For those boys your looking closer to $25mill
True Waino, 5 hours was 5 hours too long, but are you capable of recognising a disguised S*n campaign within seconds?
No I didn’t think so. Im not on here 24/7 y’know
I would call my article critical rather than negative, its only a point of view on what I think needs to be done for us to globally dominate football again.
Now Kewell is a different kettle’o fish - he’s just an over-paid ponce who would rather sit in the hairdressers than play out on the hallowed turf of Anfield.
Now was that dis-respectful or was it deserved?
I haven’t slagged our club off end of. Let alone in the same way that the media is doing, how can you compare us together, that’s ludicrous
I support the boycott of the s*n, but I think so many Liverpool fans have become overly sensitive about other issues recently. I disagree with this authors comments, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to attack his freedom of speech.
And what the f*ck was that boycott of Sky about? Andy Gray is always going to be biased, just ignore it, who gives a sh*t. Us Liverpool fans look like such a bunch of p*ssers and moaners at the moment. Thats having more of a negative on the club than that tosser being a bit negative about us. Not a day goes by without some new boycott, it’s belittling the meaning of the original one.
With the greatest of respect, slagging off a number of serving Liverpol players is, de facto, slagging off the club. These players represent the club for heaven’s sake! Kewell? Well, I’ve never met the bloke, nor have you I suspect, so how can you be so insulting to him? I’ve watched him play for us and he’s never really reproduced his best form on a regular bassis, but that’s no reason to accuse him of being a ponce.
okay mate fair enuff
Well, personally I’m fed up of people playing fantasy games of who should be sold and who should be bough. Why not leave it to Rafa and the money men? Rafa has been trying to create a big squad with 2 players in every position: naturally some will be more consistent than others. I would think Riise, Kuyt, Aurelio and Pennant are reasonable squad players. Kuyt may have had a bad year, but his first year wasn’t bad. He deserves another year before a final decision is taken (especially as he has suffered from his father’s death). Hyppia should definitely stay for his 10th year: he’ll do a good back up job and that’s what loyalty’s all about. I’d like to see Crouch stay but I wonder if he’ll be content to have another year as a bit part player. If he wants out, then Rafa should sell him. Kewell should certainly go, but I don’t see the need for the insulting language. The guy is obviously one of the walking wounded of this world and probably no one is more frustrated with his problems than Harry himself. In his autobiography, Gerrard says that after the CL final Kewell was in agony with a terrible lump on his leg: don’t call him a bottler unless you’re absolutely sure–after all (for the moment) he’s a Liverpool player. Voronin can go if we can get someone better. However, what a lot of people who indulge in this kind of fantasy exercise forget, is that it really isn’t so easy to find a top class striker who is going to be happy with being 3rd or 4th in the pecking order. Voronin might be OK as a third or 4th striker (which is probably why Rafa took him on).
In general, try to stop reinventing the team every year. Even if we got top class replacements (unlikely), they’d still take time to fit in. Let’s wait and see what this lot can do next year (with whatever additions Rafa might want to make). After all, we have just won our last 7 games on the trot–or didn’t you notice?

Aha!..Risse for 4 million??..Thats absolutely insane!..He’s even cheaper than Aurelio who rafa brought in with a FREE TRANSFER move..Plus with exprience he has,and with that super left foot of his,he must be worth 8-9 million or so..Personally i dont think risse should be sell out to make way for a better play..For me He s that “Better-Player”..Just give him a chance..He’s not playing up to his standard this season..He’s not scoring goals that doesnt mean he has 2 go..I have a funny feeking that he will score against Assenal!..
14m for Peter Crouch is too much as he has 18 months left on his contract. We will get at most 7m from him.
I’d keep Kuyt and Hyypia
what about xabi??
don’t u think total makes it 35m.i think u dont want risse 2 leave or u r poor with maths
lol actually it amounts to 34m so we’re both poor at maths
and what about Itandje? He must be worth about £250 to a potential buyer…so thats £31,000,250 Rafa has to play with.
I think Waino needs to remember Shanks’ mantra that there was “no room for sentiment in football”. Nobody likes delivering bad news but it has to be done, some players are just not good enough. Even Shanks had to do it, and I believe he used to let Bob Paisley handle that part of the job. All the ex-players will tell you that nice uncle bob could be very cutthroat in private…bu tthey all accepted that as a professional he had to do it, and they had to accept it. Its comes with being mature. So keep up the good work Redneck.
“If it wasn’t for the suicidal results we suffered during January and February, we would be dominating the EPL with comparitive ease,”
And yet, according to The Independent this morning, since January 16th we are the best team in the league. Results from that date to now have us 3 points clear at the top. Need to sort your facts out fella.
Well said glorydays, to many people play fantasy football games and then think there qualified to be able tell Rafa who he should play, buy and sell it make me laugh to be honest, football manager and game’s like that have a lot to answer for.
But at the end of the day everyone has the right to say what they think and rightly so.
So long live freedom of speech and long live Kop-TV
In Rafa We Should All Trust
Y.N.W.A
Riise, hasn’t really played well all season. He needs to show more intelligence at this level and a big 40yd pile driver into the stand is not intelligent when other players are better placed.
Carson will probbly go! £8million
Guthrie will probably go! £2million (although would like thim to stay if Alonso leaves).
Alonso - not his best season, he seems unhappy which might be affecting how he plays - a shame as he is class.
Aurelio, A sustained run in the team would make him first choice and with Insua coming through then that would be good.
Finnan is getting old but is so consistent when fit.
Hyppia - can’t perform at this level….please!! he has played 30 or more games this season and done a great job. Even as a worst case scenario, he is fantastic cover.
Crouch - not used enough to be worth 14million.
Kuyt - not good enough, especially with the number of games that he has played.
Voronin - not used enough either. 21 games this season, many as a sub and scores 4 goals. Probably as good a record as Kuyt in terms of minutes on the pitch, but we need more goals from all our other strikers.
Kewell. Goodbye
Pennant - lack of consistency. Why does everyone think lennon would be better - he is not exactly consistent at Spurs. Why do people think that we want other teams cast-offs??
I feel we are close to success, I’d hesitate mass slaughter- I don’t want Gerrard saying “next year”- next year!!!
I Hope Hypia stays- even if it’s just to play domestic cup games with a youngster. My heart would feel better and I’m sure most others would too…
Rafa Loves Aurelios style of fullback. That’s clear as day to me, so I cannot see him leaving until our other areas have improved.Maybe riise sold to make way for Heinze, maybe…
Which leaves us to the wings, yup Kewell will go to Celtic and good luck. I don’t know about the rest, in Rafa we trust…
My big question is Who’s the player Rafa told Gerrard they’re after for next year???? Gerrard said he couldn’t say but he was extremely hopeful… If it’s Henry then I’m starting to get really excited as he’s Babel’s Idol, could be Torres’ foil and Gerrard’s best mate… But then it could be many players…
Eitherway Bring on Manure!!!! Torres vs Ronaldo round I… Bring on Everton and Bring on Arse… I desparatly want to see Torres vs Ronaldo round II in Moscow 1st prize: Champions League Trophie Bonus: Player of the Year: Torres!!!!
Go The Mighty Reds AND In Rafa We Trust!!!!
Waino, you’re an idiot, blind faith is what put the Nazi’s where they got to, plus everybody desrves an opinion and to be truthful he’s pretty much got it spot on, except for me i would keep Hyypia, not as a player but as a coach. As said in the article his positioning is excellent and i would take it further to say the best i have seen, his ability to read a game and situation is awesome and this knowledge needs to be kept and transferred onto Skrtel and Agger
Sami has already said he will stay if he’s wanted and doesn’t expect to be told he’ll be guaranteed to play. Surely we need another striker, as if we’d won 3 of the games we’d drawn we’d be right up there at the top.
Riise has been a good servant to the club and has slipped down the pecking order so he’ll probably move on anyway in the summer but I wouldn’t be unhappy with him sticking around as a squad player.
Same with Sami a real legend, we really needed him this year with Agger’s injury.
Kuyt and Voronin were bought to score and create goals repectively and neither has done that effectively so I’d not shed any tears at their exit.
Aurellio has been unlucky with injury but when he has had a run he’s looked ok, i’d give him more time.
Pennant has been a victim of rotation, I think he’s a good young player but needs to work on his crossing and get an understanding with the players he’s playing with and that simply won’t happen playing 1 in 4 games.
Crouch has been treated shoddily by Rafa, I would love to see him and Torres given a run together in the side but I simply don’t think Rafa fancies him. If I was him I’d be off.
Kewell, I’m amazed he’s still here. I’d drive him myself if he can get a contract somewhere else.
And to the guy who suggested Alonso, to me he is the most complete midfielder we have. Who else can pass the ball like him in our team? In the premier league? In Europe? If we let him go we’d regret it big style
There will be big decisions to to be made in the summer and I believe Rafa, will do what has to be done and do it wisely. We have four players in our reserve team, that I believe will make the step up next season. Insua, will come in for Riise, with 5mil recouped. Nemeth, for Voronin, 1or2 mil? San Jose, for Sami and Leto, for Kewell. Rafa, will have to decide what to do with Guthrie, Hobbs, Carson, Anderson and Hamill? These are all good players, that would bring in big money without any disruption to the team.Kuyt or Crouch, will go,but not both and I beleve he will bring in one or two top players like Alaves,Benzema, Quaresma or Villa? The reserve players mentioned are real quality players, especially Insua and San jose. These lads will be first team regulars before long.
I think your hard on Voronin.
Voronin was great in the beginning, scored a great goal at Toulose from 25-yards.
He was MoM against besiktas.
And then Rafa rotated!!!! So he lost his form and get injured…
Voronin is a goalgetter, wordharker, and got pace…we only got 2 strikers with PACE, that’s Torres and Voronin
Voronin can only play with Crouch though, which isn’t efficient.
personally i think we could sell riise for 7 and aurelio for only 3 crouchie is 11 but i would take 6 and michael johnson if we sell xabi.
we need 1 or 2 wingers lennon? a striker and 2 full backs
Sell Riise: max 2 mill £
Sell Aurelio: max 2 mill £
Rafa should test Insua and bring in another quality LB: P. Lahm-B. Munchen 10 mill £ ,who also can play RB.
Keep Hyypia another year-he´s been better than Carragher this year.
Finnan as backup to a new RB, Dani Alves, maybe too expensive for LFC, 20 mill £ at least. What about Cicinho, haven´t really settled in Roma, 4 mill £.
We desperately need another RW-Dani Alves can play RW as well.
But I´ll say go for D. Bentley, 8 mill £
Except for the RW, we need another player for the LW, Babel is good, but not that good! Pennant can also go-4 mill £.
Go for Matias Fernandez-Villarreal, fantastic player! 12 mill £. Sell Crouch-max 8 mill £, keep Kuyt as backup. Buy another class striker. don´t think we can afford a player like D. Villa so go for O. Martins 8 mill £ and Michael Owen 8 mill £, don´t think Newcastle will make it!
Money from selling players: 14 mill £
Buying players: 50 mill £ (36 mill £)
Colin, it was a little more than “blind faith” that got the Nazis into power. My desire not to have Liverpool players slagged off is natural viz; I’m a Scouser, have a season ticket for the Main Stand and regularly go away games. I suppose I’m lucky that I can discuss the club, its players and such, before the game in the Arkles, during the game in the ground and afterwards in the Harry with other fans. I wonder how many who gladly slag off Liverpool palyers on fora such as ths know where Anfield is?
i 4 one agree kewell must go but go easy on him injuries have RUINED HIM NOT LACK OF TRYING and i remember a few years back he almost single handedly beat england whilst playing for australia so he isnt hopeless.
He doesn’t help his cause by strolling around the pitch looking like he wants someone to get the ball for him and put it at his feet.
He won’t run - and that makes him a hopeless winger in my eyes.
i would probaly agree with all of that, except Andriy Voronin, i would pay someone to have him, i mean he is useless to have, a complete waste of space
