Carra: “We haven’t clicked yet”
A drab draw against Standard Liege preceded clunky victories against Sunderland and Middlesbrough for Liverpool FC. The results have been coming, but not in the manner that vice-captain Jamie Carragher would like.
“We just haven’t clicked yet,” he said according to the Daily Mail.
“And if we perform as we have over the past few weeks, it is going to be extremely difficult to beat Standard Liege.
“We will improve, I’m sure of that.”
Carragher did his part by scoring a deflected goal in the 85th minute versus Middlesbrough to start the dramatic comeback. The central defender earns his spot in the squad thanks to defensive stubbernness rather than finishing prowess, and it’s unlikely Carragher will be on the score sheet to save Liverpool’s Champion’s League aspirations.
“We have too many good players to keep performing like this but it’s got to start on Wednesday.
“What happened at the end is something we’ve done so many times at Anfield, particularly kicking towards the Kop.
“Something breaks for you in the last 10 minutes, and they are sucking a goal in.
“Liverpool have been doing that dating back to the Bill Shankly days.”

Gerrard longs for Fortress Anfield
Liverpool secured all 3 points at home Saturday, and captain Steven Gerrard is looking for more of the same. He wants opposing teams to know that when they cross under the “This is Anfield” sign, they are about to lose a match of football.
“Last season we only lost once at home but had too many draws which isn’t good enough,” said Gerrard to Liverpoolfc.tv. “You need your home form to be immaculate.
“We have got maximum points from our two games and still haven’t played anywhere near the level we are capable of. We know we can improve but we kept going until the end against Middlesbrough and showed great character.”
(August 24, 2008)
Keane: “Winning all that matters”
Liverpool are yet to perform well this season, but they have 6 points from the opening two games. For new signing Robbie Keane, the victory is enough.
“Football is about winning, it doesn’t matter how well you play so long as you come off the pitch having picked up the points,” he said to Liverpoolfc.tv.
“When you don’t play as well as you know you can but you are still getting results then that is a sign of a good team. When we do start playing well we’re confident we’ll keep getting the points on the board to make sure we are in the mix at the top of the table.”
For Keane it was his first game at Anfield and he marked the occation with the assist to Gerrard’s dramatic winner.
“It was nice to play my first competitive game at Anfield but at the end of the day the most important thing was to win,” he said.
“It doesn’t matter whether it’s my first game here or not, it’s about winning and I’ve settled in well now so the match was all about getting three points on the board and we managed to do that.
“It was a frustrating game but they made it hard for us and you have to give credit to Middlesbrough. A lot of teams are going to come to Anfield and make it hard for us and get people behind the ball and that’s what they did.
“They caught us on the break and it was a good strike from Mido, but I thought we showed a lot of character to get back into the game. That’s what top teams do and we showed that desire with the two late goals.”
The partnership between Keane and superstar Fernando Torres has yet to hit off. Neither have scored with the other on the pitch. It’s not something that worries the Irishman.
“I think we worked well today and I really enjoyed the game,” he said.
“Obviously winning the match makes you happy but in terms of how we linked up I thought we played well together and hopefully there will be more to come from us as a strike partnership.
“I’m not too concerned about getting that first goal. People keep going on about it and seem more bothered about it than me. I know it’ll come and as long as the team is winning that’s the most important thing for everyone involved.”
